HUNTER WATER WALKS KOKODA FOR WATERAID
September 2007
Staff from Hunter Water and plumbing contractor Mullanes, will walk the 96 kilometre Kokoda track in October to raise much needed funds for WaterAid Australia.
WaterAid Australia is an organisation which helps to provide permanent solutions to people in developing countries who do not have access to safe drinking water and adequate sanitation.
Hunter Water’s Managing Director, Kevin Young and Mullanes CEO Tony Rhodes, will be part of the team on the trek.
“More than 1 billion people in the developing world do not have access to safe, clean water and more than 2.5 billion lack basic sanitation facilities,” Mr Young said.
“And almost half of them suffer from health problems due to this lack of basic services.”
In addition, women and children spend hours each day walking to collect the water that ultimately makes them ill.
“In the developing world, millions of people walk hours every day just to have enough water to survive.”
“This means that the children in particular cannot attend school and receive an education that could help them to improve their way of life.”
The group fly out on 15 October for the eight day expedition. Anyone wanting to make a donation for this worthy cause can contact Dean Taylor on 4979 9495.
