Clubs at the Crossroads!
Forsythes Assurance & Risk has released results from their annual 2009/2010 Hunter & Central Coast Clubs Index showing operating conditions remain difficult for Clubs in the region, with only around half of all Clubs profitable. The Index shows that only 51% of Clubs in the Hunter and Central Coast region made money, which was down from 55% from the previous year.
“The results of the Index confirm that the Club industry remains under significant financial pressure with many Clubs facing an uphill battle to survive,” said Forsythes Assurance & Risk Partner, Mr Martin Matthews.
“It is clear that Clubs are making an effort to increase patronage, with Club revenues increasing by an average of 6% across the Hunter and Central Coast Clubs region in 2009/10. However, these increased revenues have not translated to the bottom line. Greater expenditure in the areas of entertainment, member promotions & facilities and marketing have eroded these increased revenues,” Mr Matthews said.

Forsythes art with a conscience deemed a success!
Using pencil, oil or pastel, on canvas, paper or wood: the artworks in the Forsythes’ Collectors Care exhibition were diverse and helped Samaritans raise thousands of dollars for the local community.
Forsythes’ Collectors Care, supporting the Samaritans Foundation, was held at the Front Room Gallery, Newcastle Art School TAFE from October 6 to 9.
Artworks in the exhibition came from a range of artists with the collection including Novocastrian landscapes, digital photography and glass artworks. All works were for sale and a maximum price of only $1000, with 35% commission going towards the Samaritans Foundation.
Gael Davies, formerly of von Bertouch Galleries, worked with Samaritans to curate the Forsythes’ Collectors Care exhibition this year.
CEO of Samaritans, Cec Shevels, said the Collectors Care exhibition was a great success, with many of the artworks sold on the opening night.
“A big thank you to our major sponsor, Forsythes, for making such a significant contribution to the Collectors Care Exhibition and allowing Samaritans to fundraise for the wider community,” he said.
“$22485 worth of artworks were sold, which provided proceeds of over $8000 for the Samaritans Foundation, and this will go towards assisting families in need over this Christmas period.”
This year’s artists included John Morris, Claire Martin, David Boyd, Michael Bell, Matthew Tome, Peter Gardiner, Madeleine Winch, Andy Devine, Jane Lander and many other outstanding artists.

New office and expanded services for Forsythes Recruitment
Hunter based Forsythes Recruitment has opened for business in its new office in Honeysuckle. The recruitment and organisational development company has relocated from its Scott Street premises to the Chifley Building.
Co-owner Paul Hankinson said the move locates the business in the growth precinct of Newcastle and extends the Forsythes brand across the city.
Mr Hankinson said the move comes at a time when the company is expanding its service offering, particularly in the area of organisational development and psychological assessment. Forsythes’ trades and industrial labour hire capability is also being boosted in response to the renewed mining boom and re-emerging trade skills shortage in the region.
“Forsythes Recruitment is relocating and expanding its services to meet the changing needs of its clients,” Mr Hankinson said.
“Most people know us for our recruitment expertise but we also have a depth of talent in developing people and organisations,” he said.
“The changes will ensure Forsythes Recruitment remains a market leader in the Hunter and Central Coast regions.”
Forsythes’ Workplace Coaching and Organisational Consulting Division is headed by Rick Robinson. It specialises in coaching and advice to help organisations to develop and retain talented people, improve leadership, strengthen teamwork, resolve conflicts and foster cultural change.
The Organisational Psychology Division is headed by Ben Hainsworth. It offers techniques and advice for pre-employment assessment, performance management and corporate health services to help organisations to select, manage and develop the talented people that advance their business.
